TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT - Subrata Sarkar - 'Subi' First Spotlighted September 2015
Everyone knows him as Subi. And we mean everyone. When Subi was a very young man he was a fiery activist for the communist cause, a philosophy that found fertile soil amongst the poverty and depressed economy of his native state of West Bengal. Little did Subi know that this gifting, preparation, and passion was given to him for a different purpose. On the day God apprehended Subi his life changed forever. This man who had formerly lived for a political ideal now directed all of that zeal towards helping others because of the love of God. He began to proclaim this message to anyone who would listen. Soon everyone knew Subi.
Subi is a slight man yet he can never be overlooked. His presence fills a room. He speaks with a clear, authoritative voice in a manner so expressive and animated he can only be described as charismatic. People listen. So many years ago when Billy Graham came to India and needed someone to interpret his message into Bengali, he was pointed to Subi. Subi went on to interpret for three generations of this famous family, as well as many other notable speakers who came to India, including Joyce Meyers, making Subi a minor celebrity in India. But you wouldn't know any of that if you met this humble man.
Along the way Subi met Rajib Arohan. When Rajib returned from nine months of training in the U.S. in 1998, these two men joined forces to take this powerful message of hope to West Bengal and beyond. Subi and Rajib have labored together now for almost twenty years, and if you have met one, you know the other. Subi leads the church in Purulia, the church from which all Covenant Family Churches in India and Bangladesh sprang. He continues to labor with Rajib in the larger work among these far-flung villages as often as needed. He recently accompanied Rajib to Bangladesh to help establish the work there. Subi's devoted wfe, Dipthi, is a community health nurse. They have two wonderful children: A son who serves in a program to restore young women victimized by sex slavery and prostitution, and a daughter who serves as a nurse in a large hospital. Subi and his family are helping transform India.
